Traditional active power filter (APF) is based on inverter topology, damageable and expensive because of large-volume electrolytic capacitors in DC side as energy storage element. A novel APF based on insolated high frequency push-pull forward AC-AC converter (IHF-PPFAC) is proposed in this paper. Working principle of the novel APF based on even harmonic modulation (EHM) technique is analyzed. Fourier series decomposition is applied to study compensation characteristics. EHM coupling problem is discovered and solution is proposed. Mathematical model of the system is established. Closed-loop control program based on successive harmonic compensation strategy (SHCS) is designed. Results of simulation and experiment verify feasibility of the proposed novel APF. The device does not use DC energy storage components, thus electrical isolation between compensation capacitors and grid-side is realized. It can achieve comprehensive compensation of reactive power and harmonics, suitable for three-phase three-wire balance system.
